What's everyone's favourite piece of Kanno Magic? |
Lead | ||||

OK, I was really suprised when I didn't find this as a topic already. What's everyone's favourite original music from the series. Yoko Kanno is my idol and first introduced me into jazz, blues and bizarre japanese electronica. My favourite would have to be Green Bird at the moment, it just fitted the end of Ballad of Fallen Angels really well. I also like The Egg and I and Cat On Mars, but I thought they were a bit shallow to be my favourite.

1: BLUE
2: RAIN The female vocalist is awesome.. I did not like the male vocalist for RAIN.. just wasn't right. |

Yeah Rain is great. The female vocalist is Mai Yamane who sings the Real Folk Blues at the end of each episode. The guy was Steve Conte, his voice didn't really go with the song.

Yeah.. Yemane did most of the songs.. like Blue.
Conte's rendition of Rain sounded very painful. |

I actually LIKE the guy's rendition of "Rain." It grows on you. It's fun to sing, too.
But anyway, I like just about everything off of the first Bebop soundtrack CD. There's not a whole lot I skip. Interestingly enough, I like Macross Plus's music- both volumes one and two, and since Kanno did the music for most of it, there are some songs on Macross that actually have a Cowboy Bebop feel to them. Kinda' odd |

Yeah I must admit the Cowboy Bebop is one of the first soundtracks that I don't skip through to get to the best songs, just because they're all of such good quality.
Macross Plus you say, hmm I'll have to give it a listen, I've been looking for stuff to fill the void left by the end of Cowboy Bebop. Cheers Survival of the fittest is the law of nature, we deceive or we are deceived. Thus we flourish or perish... That is the lesson. -Faye Valentine |

Exactly. It was superior to the female vocalist in every way. See You Space Cowboy, Tank!, Rain, The Real Folk Blues, Ask DNA, and others ( But mostly those). <l0wkey> i used to be a freelance gynecologist |

I think that the version of Rain you like the most is decided by which one you've heard more often. I personally watched the series loads before I got the soundtrack so I like Mai's version, but my friends who bought the soundtrack early like Steve's. Hey you might agree, you might not it's just my opinion.
Great choice of tracks, Tank! was by far my favourite song when I first watched Bebop but after listening to it 26 times by the end of the series I sort of ignore it now. Nice to see a Bebop Movie song in there too, I watched it again the other day and I love the soundtrack, especially Ask DNA and Gotta Knock A Little Harder. Personally, I like the female version of "Rain" more, because it sounds better. However, there is a different feel to the male version.. it sounds painful.. something that I would listen to when I'm depressed.
And Mai Yemane p0wns Steve Conte.. that's right, you read me loud and clear. |

Heh- I don't even remember the female version, sadly enough.
I do listen to the male version when I am bummed. It's how it is. It reminds me of a lot of things...none-the-least of which my ex and last summer when she went to Basic Training...

The female version was used in the series.. in Episode 5.. as Spike walked to his cathedral battle with Vicious.

I didn't think this topic would lead to a Rain war. You both make good points, just please don't turn the board into a battleground
So what did everyone think of the way the style of music changed from the series in the movie. There was more of a pop feel and not as much jazz and blues, I personally thought it was quite good. Listened to the Egg and I this morning, it's a really happy song, contrasts with the pretty depressing choices so far. Survival of the fittest is the law of nature, we deceive or we are deceived. IMO, the album "BLUE" is the most cohesive representation of Kanno at her best. It's very silky and jazzy too.
